Frostpunk 1886 Is a Stunning UE5 Reimagining of the Original, Bringing New Mechanics, Paths, and Long-Awaited Mod Support

Polish studio 11 bit studios has officially unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a full reimagining of the original Frostpunk, rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology. This ambitious new version is not a mere visual remaster but a content-rich rework, slated for release sometime in 2027. It promises to expand on every core aspect of the critically acclaimed survival city-builder that first captivated players in 2018.

According to the official Steam page and the announcement trailer, Frostpunk 1886 will introduce entirely new mechanics, technologies, events, and building types, significantly broadening the scope and replayability of the original. Players familiar with the tension-filled decision-making that defined Frostpunk will be especially intrigued by the inclusion of a brand-new Purpose path—joining the previously established Faith and Order routes—offering more narrative and strategic diversity.

One of the most highly requested features by the Frostpunk community is finally being realized: mod support. The move from the original’s proprietary Liquid Engine to Unreal Engine 5 not only enables stunning visual fidelity but also opens the door for players to create, share, and experience user-generated content. This shift will help foster a deeper relationship between the developers and community, allowing Frostpunk’s haunting world of cold survival to evolve dynamically over time.

11 bit studios has made it clear that Frostpunk 1886 is not meant to replace the upcoming Frostpunk 2, but rather exist alongside it. Both titles will receive ongoing content updates, reinforcing the developer’s commitment to expanding the universe of Frostpunk through both forward-looking sequels and reimagined classics.

While Frostpunk 1886 is still years away from launch, the announcement has already energized long-time fans and new players alike. With Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities and 11 bit’s proven talent for emotionally resonant survival storytelling, this project could well redefine what reimaginings mean in modern game development.

What’s one new feature or mechanic you’d like to see in Frostpunk 1886? Would you stick to Order, Faith—or try the new Purpose path? Let us know in the comments!
