Square Enix has officially delayed Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold from its original January 2027 release window to February 23, 2027, placing the highly anticipated MMORPG expansion directly against several major gaming releases. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida announced the decision during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo, explaining that additional development time was necessary to meet the studio's quality expectations. According to the official Square Enix announcement, early access will begin February 19, while preorders open November 4, 2026.
Yoshida explained that the development team had worked toward the original January schedule and was technically close to meeting it. However, concerns over the expansion's overall quality prompted him to authorize approximately 3 additional weeks of development. The producer personally apologized to players during the presentation, acknowledging the disappointment caused by the postponement. Evercold represents the first major expansion since Dawntrail launched in July 2024, making the additional development period particularly significant for the game's established community.
Unfortunately, the revised launch places Evercold in one of the busiest gaming months of early 2027. Most notably, the expansion now releases on the same day as Playground Games' Fable reboot, which launches February 23 across Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Other major releases scheduled throughout February include Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, God of War: Laufey, and Persona 4 Revival. Although Final Fantasy XIV maintains a dedicated player base, with Square Enix confirming more than 35 million registered accounts, the crowded release calendar could create difficult decisions for players interested in multiple RPGs.
Beyond the release date, Square Enix revealed several important additions coming with Evercold. The expansion introduces Zephyr, a new physical ranged DPS job that combines crossbow attacks with assistance from an avian companion named Nephele. Joining the previously announced Bastion tank, Zephyr expands the available combat options as the game prepares for substantial changes to its battle systems.
The expansion also introduces the Icebound Realm of the Fourth, a new Fierce raid difficulty positioned between Normal and Savage, and an Evolved Combat Mode designed to emphasize individual job identities. Additional features include a redesigned Seasons reward system, expanded character customization, and the upcoming Beyond the Lifestream raid series connected to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Square Enix also showcased new footage from the EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire collaboration, including challenging encounters adapted from its alliance raid bosses.
According to the official Fan Festival presentation, preorders include early access, a Wind Up Köttr minion, and Halone's Earring, which provides a 30% experience bonus from defeating enemies. Evercold will launch across Windows, Mac, Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with a new character creation benchmark planned for December.
Delaying Evercold to improve quality is a reasonable decision, particularly for an established MMORPG where technical issues, combat balance, and progression systems can affect millions of players. However, moving into February creates an unusually competitive release window, especially with Fable launching on the same day. While dedicated Final Fantasy XIV players are unlikely to abandon their existing characters and communities, the overlap could influence how much time players invest in other major releases. Ultimately, Square Enix's priority should remain delivering a polished expansion that justifies the extended development cycle, rather than compromising its quality to avoid competition.
Will you prioritize Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold when it launches on February 23, or will Fable and the other major February releases take your attention first?
