Entire Staff of Three Fields Entertainment Faces Possible Layoffs Following Wreckreation Launch

Three Fields Entertainment, the independent studio founded by former Criterion developers known for their pivotal work on the Burnout franchise, is now facing a critical moment. Following the October launch of Wreckreation, the studio’s open world sandbox driving game released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, chief executive officer Fiona Sperry has announced that the entire studio team has been placed on redundancy notice and may lose their jobs.

Although Wreckreation debuted with a wave of technical issues that affected early player sentiment, Sperry did not directly cite the launch performance as the cause behind the sweeping layoffs. Instead, she outlined systemic financial challenges in a deeply personal message shared on LinkedIn.

“Today I am having to share one of the hardest messages of my career,” Sperry wrote. “After twelve years of building and nurturing Three Fields Entertainment, I am forced into the situation of today placing our entire team on notice of redundancy.” She added that the studio has worked tirelessly since launch to deliver fixes, community requested features, and ongoing updates. However, the core issue lies not in effort, but in financial sustainability.

Sperry explained that as an independent studio, Three Fields does not receive immediate revenue from Wreckreation’s sales. Most of 2025 and all of the post launch content development have been self funded. Compounding the problem is the lack of ongoing enthusiasm or financial support from their publishing partner, leaving the studio unable to sustain operations in its current form.

Alongside her statement, Sperry shared a video showcasing post launch content, including refinements and new features aimed at improving the game’s long term appeal and restoring player confidence. She expressed hope that by publicly highlighting the studio’s continued work, new opportunities or potential partnerships might emerge.

“My hope is that by showing this work publicly, someone out there might also see that potential and perhaps an opportunity could still emerge,” she wrote. Even if it does not, she emphasized that the team’s efforts serve as a testament to their skill, passion, and dedication.

In closing, Sperry extended heartfelt gratitude to players and supporters. She confirmed that the team will still deliver the next major update which includes full Crossplay support before Christmas despite covering all associated costs themselves.

This marks the second major release from Three Fields Entertainment that has fallen short commercially, placing the studio’s future at significant risk. The industry now watches closely as one of the most creatively driven independent studios of the last decade faces a turbulent and uncertain outcome.

How do you feel about the situation at Three Fields Entertainment? Can Wreckreation still find its audience with upcoming updates and Crossplay support? Share your thoughts.
