Dragon Quest XII Could Finally Reemerge on May 27 as Yuji Horii Teases an Announcement About the “Next Game”
After nearly 5 years of silence, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate may finally be ready to step back into the spotlight. During a recent broadcast, series creator Yuji Horii said a Dragon Quest livestream is planned for May 27 to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary, and added, “I think we’ll be able to make an announcement about the next game.” That is the clearest public hint in years that Square Enix may finally be ready to talk about what comes next for the series, even if Horii stopped short of explicitly naming Dragon Quest XII.
That distinction matters. Right now, there is still no official confirmation that the May 27 reveal will specifically focus on Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. Horii’s wording only confirms that an announcement about the “next game” is expected during the anniversary stream. Still, given that Dragon Quest XII was first announced in May 2021 and has remained largely absent from public view since then, it is naturally the title most fans are now looking at.
The timing also makes this moment especially important for the franchise. A 40th anniversary broadcast is exactly the kind of stage where Square Enix could choose to reintroduce one of its most important long term projects. Gematsu’s report on Horii’s remarks says the stream will include other announcements as well, but the “next game” line is what has immediately reignited speculation around Dragon Quest XII.
If it does show up, the reveal would end one of the more notable quiet periods for a major JRPG sequel. Since its original reveal, Dragon Quest XII has remained mostly mysterious, with very little officially discussed beyond its title and the fact that it is intended to push the series in a somewhat new direction. That long absence has only increased curiosity, especially now that the Dragon Quest brand has maintained strong visibility through remakes and reintroductions of older entries. This last point is an inference based on the game’s known public silence and the current anniversary setup, rather than a new official statement.
So for now, the safest conclusion is simple. May 27 is now a real date for Dragon Quest fans to watch closely. Horii has publicly said there will be an announcement about the next game, and while that does not yet guarantee a full Dragon Quest XII re reveal, it is the strongest sign in years that the project or something equally important in the franchise is finally ready to be shown again.
What do you think, will May 27 finally give us a real look at Dragon Quest XII, or do you expect Square Enix to save the full reveal for later in the year?
