Dragon Quest VII Remake Reportedly in Development, Targeting 2026–2027 Release
A new remake of Dragon Quest VII is reportedly in development, with its launch expected as early as next year or by early 2027. The news, first reported by MP1st, points to internal Square Enix documents that outline multiple major upcoming projects tied to the publisher’s top franchises. Among them is the Dragon Quest VII remake, allegedly planned for release during the current fiscal year ending March 2026, or shortly after.
According to the report, the project is listed as a “remake” rather than a “remaster” or “HD remake”. Square Enix’s usual language for lighter re-releases like the recent HD-2D titles (Live A Live, Dragon Quest III, Octopath Traveler). This distinction suggests that the new Dragon Quest VII may feature significantly updated visuals, mechanics, and possibly narrative enhancements beyond what fans have seen in other remakes of legacy titles.
ResetEra users also cited insider insights, including remarks reportedly linked to reliable industry journalist Jason Schreier, hinting that while the scope of the remake may not be on the scale of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it will likely be more ambitious than the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII, which itself was a substantial update to the original PlayStation 1 title.
Dragon Quest VII is known for being the longest entry in the franchise, with a standard playthrough easily exceeding 80 hours due to its deep narrative and large volume of time-traveling content spread across numerous islands and eras. Even if the remake draws heavily from the 3DS version, which improved character pacing, visuals, and reduced the opening hours' grind, it will still demand a significant time investment. However, for fans of the series, both newcomers and veterans of the PS1 era it promises a rewarding and nostalgic experience.
While Square Enix has not officially confirmed the remake, the company is already preparing to release the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake this October, providing fans something to tide them over while awaiting more news. Given the momentum of Dragon Quest XII and other franchise projects, it’s clear Square Enix is doubling down on one of its most beloved IPs.
Would you replay or finally try Dragon Quest VII if this rumored remake becomes reality? What features or updates would you hope to see in it?
