Destiny 2: Edge of Fate Launches July 15, Kicking Off ‘The Fate Saga’ with Renegades and Two More Expansions Announced

Bungie has officially lifted the veil on Destiny 2: Edge of Fate, the next major expansion in the long-running sci-fi MMO. Unveiled during a multi-speaker showcase available to watch here, Edge of Fate is set to launch on July 15, 2025, and marks the beginning of a multi-year narrative arc titled The Fate Saga. This new saga, which unfolds after the close of the Light and Dark saga, will span at least three additional expansions: Renegades (December 2, 2025), Shattered Cycle, and The Alchemist (both arriving in 2026).

A New Era of Storytelling and Content Access

One of the most player-celebrated changes coming with Edge of Fate is the removal of seasonal paywalls. According to Bungie, buying the new expansion will now grant players access to all related seasonal content without requiring additional purchases. This marks a substantial quality-of-life improvement, especially for new or returning Guardians.

“Play your way” and “player agency” were central themes throughout the presentation, reflecting Bungie's broader strategy to make Destiny 2 more accessible and less fragmented.

Narrative Director Alison Lurhs and Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens introduced the key story premise: Edge of Fate centers around The Nine, ancient celestial entities tied to the solar system’s planets (excluding Pluto) and the Sun. Players will journey to Kepler, a mysterious planetoid on the edge of the Sol system, where they’ll unlock new Dark Matter powers.

New Gameplay Abilities and Metroidvania Inspiration

Among the biggest gameplay reveals were two brand-new traversal and combat abilities:

  • Matterspark: Allows Guardians to transform into a high-speed, electric rolling ball — strongly reminiscent of Metroid’s iconic Morph Ball.

  • Mattermorph: Grants players the ability to reshape and manipulate the environment to solve puzzles and open new routes.

These mechanics, paired with Kepler’s dynamic landscapes, represent a shift toward Metroidvania-style gameplay, emphasizing exploration and ability-driven navigation.

Free Narrative Prologue Dungeons Now Live

In the lead-up to Edge of Fate, Bungie has released three narrative prologue dungeonsExplorer, Eternity, and Ultimatumnow available for free to all players. These early missions provide glimpses into the looming conflict and begin setting the stage for The Nine and Kepler.

Destiny 2 Finally Gets a Shooting Range

Another long-requested feature is finally coming to Destiny 2 in July — a permanent Shooting Range located in the Tower. This testing ground will allow players to try out weapons and abilities in a controlled environment with live damage tracking, giving Guardians better ways to fine-tune their builds.

Renegades: A Star Wars-Inspired Space Western Arrives December 2025

Bungie closed the showcase with the reveal of the next expansion: Renegades, launching on December 2, 2025. Heavily inspired by Star Wars, Renegades promises space-western themes and features lightsaber-like weapons, continuing the Fate Saga narrative. The teaser trailer hints at a moody, cinematic tone and a shift toward open, frontier-style worlds.

Pre-Orders Now Available

Players can now pre-order Edge of Fate, which will kick off a bold new era for Destiny 2 as Bungie moves into what looks to be a more cohesive, accessible, and story-rich phase of the game’s evolution.
