Dead Island 2 Surpasses 20 Million Players as Franchise Marks 14 Years of Zombie Carnage

Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios have announced a major milestone for the Dead Island franchise: Dead Island 2 has now been played by over 20 million Slayers worldwide. The achievement comes as the series celebrates its 14th anniversary, marking over a decade of zombie-slaying chaos that began with the original game’s release in 2011.

Since its debut, Dead Island has built a reputation for its visceral melee combat, over-the-top gore, and dark humor. The release of Dead Island 2 in April 2023 reinvigorated the franchise with its sun-drenched Los Angeles setting -“Hell-A”- and advanced gore tech that made every encounter a bloody playground. Now, more than 20 million players have embraced the game’s brutal action, pushing the series to one of its biggest milestones yet.

While celebrating its success, Dambuster Studios also confirmed that the franchise’s future is already in development. Although no details were shared, the studio emphasized that “the outbreak is far from over,” reassuring fans that more zombie mayhem is on the horizon.

Fourteen years on, the Dead Island franchise continues to thrive, combining unapologetic gore, sandbox combat, and a loyal community of players. With a new chapter already underway, it looks like the “Zompocalypse” is set to continue well into the next generation of gaming.

Were you among the 20 million who joined the carnage in Hell-A, and what would you like to see in the next installment of Dead Island?
