Cybenetics Surprises MSI by Awarding “Platinum” Efficiency Rating to MAG GLS Series PSUs

MSI’s new MAG GLS Series power supplies have just received an unexpected upgrade in recognition from Cybenetics, moving from an initially listed “Gold” efficiency rating to a “Platinum” classification. This comes as a pleasant surprise both to MSI and PC builders, as the lineup was originally marketed and certified under the 80 PLUS Gold standard.

The MAG GLS series, which succeeds the 2024 MAG GL family, includes 1000W, 850W, 750W, and 650W variants. Built for mainstream PC builders, the new models bring support for the latest ATX 3.1, PCIe 5.1, and 12V-2x6 standards, ensuring compatibility with next-generation GPUs. The “S” in GLS is rumored to stand for “Silent,” as the lineup focuses heavily on improved acoustic performance, operating with significantly reduced noise levels compared to its predecessors.

While MSI originally submitted these units for 80 PLUS Gold and Cybenetics “Gold” evaluation, Cybenetics has since re-evaluated the entire lineup and awarded “Platinum” certifications based on their higher-than-expected efficiency performance. According to Cybenetics, to qualify for the Platinum class, a PSU must achieve:

  • Overall Efficiency: ≥89% to <91%

  • Power Factor (PF): ≥0.975

  • 5VSB Efficiency: >76%

  • Vampire Power: <0.16W

By comparison, Gold-rated units only require:

  • Overall Efficiency: ≥87% to <89%

  • Power Factor (PF): ≥0.970

  • 5VSB Efficiency: >75%

  • Vampire Power: <0.19W

The difference might appear small numerically, but crossing the Platinum threshold demonstrates higher energy efficiency, lower idle consumption, and improved voltage regulation under load - all indicators of superior PSU engineering.

Cybenetics’ highest classification, “Diamond,” currently has no certified PSUs listed on its official database, making “Platinum” one of the top-tier distinctions in the industry. MSI already holds one Titanium-rated PSU, the MEG Ai1600T PCIe5, and now adds four new Platinum units to its catalog:

The MAG GLS series is competitively priced considering its ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compliance. The A1000GLS retails for $189.99 USD, followed by the A850GLS at $149.99 USD, A750GLS at $129.99 USD, and A650GLS at $89.99 USD. Each PSU features a fully modular design and comes with a 10-year warranty, emphasizing both reliability and performance longevity.

This unexpected Platinum certification from Cybenetics reinforces MSI’s position as a strong player in the PSU market, demonstrating that even their midrange offerings can deliver top-tier efficiency and build quality usually reserved for high-end models.

What do you think of MSI’s MAG GLS lineup now reaching Platinum efficiency? Would this make you reconsider your next PSU upgrade?
