CD Projekt RED Reportedly Working On A Free To Play Co Op Witcher Game For PC And Mobile

A new report claims CD Projekt RED is developing an unannounced Witcher co op action RPG for PC and mobile, giving players the ability to create their own Witcher for the first time.

According to MP1st, CD Projekt RED may be expanding The Witcher universe with a free to play co op action RPG currently targeting PC and mobile devices. The project has not been officially announced by CD Projekt RED, so the report should be treated as a rumor for now. The game is reportedly set in 1230, during a period when Geralt of Rivia is still a young Witcher. Instead of playing as Geralt, players would create their own Witcher, with customization options covering gender, appearance, combat style, and abilities.

Gameplay is said to focus on monster hunting missions across familiar Witcher style locations, including forests, villages, and ruins. MP1st reports that the combat system will reward timing through blocks, dodges, parries, executions, Signs, potion brewing, and abilities tied to different Witcher schools.

The report naturally raises questions about Project Sirius, CD Projekt RED’s previously announced Witcher multiplayer project from The Molasses Flood. CD Projekt officially reset that project in 2023 after reassessing its scope and commercial potential, so the studio has already shown that its multiplayer Witcher plans have changed before.

However, this reported PC and mobile focus makes the situation less clear. Project Sirius was originally understood as a broader Witcher multiplayer project, while MP1st points to the possibility that this could be tied to CD Projekt RED’s wider mobile strategy or a partnership with Scopely. That distinction matters. A free to play PC and mobile Witcher game would be very different from The Witcher 4, which remains CD Projekt RED’s next mainline RPG project. It would also sit separately from The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, the 2027 expansion that CD Projekt RED is co developing with Fool’s Theory.

A free to play Witcher co op game would be a risky but understandable move for CD Projekt RED.

The Witcher universe has strong monster hunting potential, and custom Witchers could finally let players experience the Continent from outside Geralt or Ciri’s perspective. If handled properly, co op contracts, different Witcher schools, Signs, alchemy, and monster preparation could make a strong gameplay loop. The risk is the platform and business model. The Witcher audience is used to premium RPGs with strong writing, deep atmosphere, and meaningful choice. A free to play PC and mobile game would need to avoid feeling like a shallow live service spin off built around grind or monetization.

CD Projekt RED has tried mobile Witcher projects before, including The Witcher: Monster Slayer, GWENT, and Thronebreaker ports. None became the long term mobile breakout the company likely wanted. That makes this reported project important if true, but also difficult to execute.

For now, this remains unconfirmed. The idea is strong on paper, but CD Projekt RED will need to prove that free to play co op can still feel like The Witcher.

Would you play a free to play co op Witcher game if it let you create your own Witcher, or should CD Projekt RED keep the franchise focused on premium single player RPGs?
