Bungie Reveals Gameplay for Destiny 2’s Star Wars-Inspired Expansion Renegades

Bungie has unveiled the first major gameplay showcase for Destiny 2: Renegades, the upcoming expansion heavily inspired by Star Wars, during a dedicated livestream event. Alongside the reveal, the studio also launched the Ash & Iron update, marking the first major content drop for the current Year of Prophecy.

Originally teased earlier this year during the reveal of Edge of Fate, Renegades is set to launch on December 2, 2025, and today’s footage confirmed just how strongly the expansion leans into Star Wars influences. Gameplay highlights included lightsaber-like melee weapons, Imperial-style walkers, blasters that evoke Star Wars sound design, and even starfighter combat reminiscent of X-Wings. Bungie appears to be fully embracing the theme, blending it into Destiny’s sci-fi universe.

In Renegades, players will venture into “The Lawless Frontier,” a new setting built around high-risk, high-reward contracts. Guardians can take on smuggling, bounty hunting, and sabotage missions that can be completed solo or with a fireteam. The expansion spans three planets and six maps, each layered with Destiny’s recognizable design but given a bold Star Wars-inspired aesthetic.

Meanwhile, Bungie also rolled out the Ash & Iron update, which revisits the Plaguelands for the first time since the original Destiny. The update includes a new three-player fireteam activity, a refreshed rewards pass for Edge of Fate, and sets the stage for an upcoming raid. On September 27, Guardians will be able to take on the epic raid The Desert Perpetual.

With Renegades’ release on the horizon, Bungie is clearly setting up one of the most ambitious expansions in Destiny’s history, fusing iconic Star Wars-style elements with the franchise’s trademark gunplay and cooperative gameplay.

Do you think the heavy Star Wars influence will reinvigorate Destiny 2’s universe, or should Bungie keep its expansions closer to the series’ original identity?
