Launched in 2022 as an open world action adventure collaboration between the creators of The Division and the cinematic universe of James Cameron’s Avatar, the game arrived with enormous expectations. Despite the franchise’s combined $5.2 billion in box office revenue, the title landed to mixed reviews from critics and players. Now, with Avatar Fire and Ash arriving in theaters on December 19 and the From the Ashes expansion launching the same day, Massive is positioning the game for a substantial second wind.

The headline addition in Update 2.0 is the long awaited third person camera. Initially launched as a first person only experience, the update now allows players to freely switch between perspectives, addressing long standing accessibility concerns for players sensitive to first person motion. The camera toggle is simple: press J on PC, hold the touchpad on PlayStation 5, or hold the View button on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The update also introduces New Game Plus, enabling players to start a fresh journey while retaining all previously earned gear and skills. NG+ includes a new Sarentu specific skill tree, higher level gear tiers, and significantly tougher enemies to challenge veteran players.

From a technical standpoint, Update 2.0 is one of the most substantial graphical refreshes Ubisoft has released for any of its open world titles. The patch adds:

  • NVIDIA DLSS 4, powered by NVIDIA’s new transformer model

  • DLSS Multi Frame Generation

  • DLSS Ray Reconstruction

  • DLSS Frame Generation (CNN based option still supported)

  • Intel XeSS 2

  • XeSS Frame Generation

  • AMD FSR 4 (enabled through driver level for AMD users only)

These upgrades bring the game fully in line with the latest GPU features across NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel, making it a showcase for state of the art upscaling and frame generation technologies.

Massive also outlined several known issues related to frame generation:

  • Crashes on startup when XeSS Frame Generation is enabled

  • Frame generation cannot be activated while the Steam Overlay is active

  • FSR3 Frame Generation may cause stuttering in Borderless Fullscreen mode

  • Switching from Borderless to Fullscreen with Frame Generation enabled can severely drop performance

The team notes that fixes are underway and will be deployed in future updates.

With a third person mode, NG+, and a comprehensive suite of next gen rendering technologies, Update 2.0 positions Avatar Frontiers of Pandora for renewed momentum ahead of its upcoming expansion and movie release.

Will Update 2.0 bring you back to Pandora? What feature excites you the most third person, NG+, or the new upscaling tech? Let us know.
