Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Naoe and Yasuke’s Stealth and Combat Masterclass at Nijo Palace

With its March 20 launch on PS5 fast approaching, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is already generating buzz as new gameplay footage reveals how protagonists Naoe and Yasuke employ a blend of stealth and brutal combat to take down the formidable Nijo Palace in Kyoto’s Yamashiro region. The recent PlayStation.Blog offered a 20-minute gameplay preview that immerses players in an intense, strategically layered infiltration of the historic castle complex.

Stealth and Strategy: Naoe’s Approach

The gameplay begins at night with Naoe’s stealthy entry into Nijo Palace. Utilizing her Hidden Blade, she silently dispatches a perimeter guard before scaling rooftops with her trusty grappling hook. Unlike previous iterations of the series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows refines its stealth mechanics by replacing the typical avian scout with an “Observe” mechanic. This enables Naoe and her counterpart Yasuke to tag enemies, objectives, or loot directly with focused vision.

While traversing the castle, Naoe identifies a Samurai Daisho a high-value target that must be eliminated to unlock the valuable loot chest associated with the tenshu. To overcome the formidable health barrier of this elite guard, Naoe adapts her loadout by switching her headgear to one that boosts air assassination damage, enabling a one-hit takedown. Later in the mission, she calls in her ally Gennojo to stun nearby enemies, further solidifying her tactical approach.

Using Eagle Vision, Naoe scans interior structures to differentiate hostile targets rendered in red from civilians in orange. This system, combined with environmental stealth tools such as extinguishing lanterns and leveraging ceiling routes, allows her to navigate complex areas and execute precise assassinations behind shoji doors.

Yasuke’s Bold Infiltration

In contrast, Yasuke’s approach is marked by his physical prowess and tactical adaptability during daytime infiltration. Lacking a grappling hook, he utilizes low-hanging trees to scale rooftops, relying on his bow to silently dispatch guards from afar. Crouching and crawling along pitched rooflines, Yasuke maintains a low profile before calling upon ally Oni-Yuri, a poison specialist who incapacitates multiple foes at once.

Yasuke’s progression through the palace is a study in aggressive yet calculated combat. Confronted with a critical bell tower that threatens to alert the entire tenshu, he expertly neutralizes the risk with precise ranged attacks. His transition from stealth to full combat is seamless—switching from his bow to a massive kanabo club to overpower a final Samurai Daisho, earning him crucial mastery points and paving the way for his ascent into the castle.

These advanced technical capabilities ensure that every stealth move and combat encounter is rendered with exceptional clarity and responsiveness, enhancing the immersive experience as players explore the storied halls of Nijo Palace.
