Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Sells 2 Million Copies and Sets Steam Franchise Record

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sold 2 million copies during its first day following its July 9 release, delivering one of the strongest launches in the history of the franchise. According to the official Ubisoft announcement, the remake also ranked first on Twitch during launch day and reached 99,451 concurrent Steam players within its opening 24 hours. SteamDB confirms this as the highest concurrent player peak ever recorded by an Assassin’s Creed game on the platform, comfortably surpassing the previous franchise record established by Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Critical reception has also been positive. Ubisoft reported an 85 average on OpenCritic and an 84 score on Metacritic, making Resynced the highest rated Assassin’s Creed release since the original Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.

“Black Flag has always held a special place in the heart of the community, and ours. Bringing it back with Resynced was a promise to that passion for Edward’s adventures, and to the unique sense of freedom players experienced back then. Seeing so many players set sail on day one, along with the great reviews from critics, is the greatest reward we could have hoped for.
— Martin Schelling, Head of Assassin’s Creed Brand”

The successful release has been overshadowed by planned workforce reductions at Ubisoft Barcelona, where 51 employees are reportedly affected despite members of the studio contributing to the remake. Reports indicate that the restructuring was communicated before launch and followed a decision not to assign additional Vantage Studios projects to the Barcelona team.

Black Flag Resynced demonstrates that Ubisoft can generate major engagement by rebuilding a proven classic with meaningful technical and gameplay improvements. Reaching nearly 100,000 simultaneous Steam players is particularly significant for a traditionally console focused franchise and could encourage Ubisoft to accelerate further remakes. Attention will now shift toward Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which is rumored to target 2027 and feature protagonist Anika alongside a possible Ezio Auditore connection. These narrative details remain unconfirmed by Ubisoft.

Does the success of Black Flag Resynced prove that Ubisoft should remake more classic Assassin’s Creed games, or should the company focus entirely on new experiences?
