AMD Debunks Pre-CES Radeon RX 9070 "RDNA 4" GPU Rumors, Teases Superior Gaming Performance
AMD has officially addressed rumors surrounding its upcoming Radeon RX 9070 GPUs, stating that pre-CES leaks have underestimated the performance of its RDNA 4 lineup. Speaking in an interview with PC World, Frank Azor, AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming, refuted earlier claims, confirming that the RX 9070 XT will deliver faster rasterization and ray tracing performance than previously anticipated.
AMD Responds to RX 9070 Rumors
During the interview, Azor clarified that AMD strategically delayed the launch of RDNA 4 GPUs to better understand NVIDIA’s offerings before entering the market. This move allowed AMD to fine-tune its approach for maximum impact. Addressing the pre-CES performance rumors, Azor stated:
"The early leaks about RX 9070 XT performance are inaccurate. The real performance is higher than suggested."
This debunks earlier claims that the RX 9070 XT would only marginally outperform the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. Recent leaks now suggest that the RX 9070 XT may rival NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 Ti Super and even approach the performance of the RTX 4080 in specific scenarios.
Improved Rasterization and Ray Tracing Performance
Azor emphasized AMD’s advancements in both raster and ray tracing performance with the RDNA 4 architecture. He hinted that the RX 9070 XT is positioned to compete directly with NVIDIA's 70-class GPUs, such as the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti. This alignment suggests a competitive pricing strategy, with the RX 9070 XT potentially priced under $500 to rival NVIDIA’s RTX 5070, which launched at $549.
Leaked Pricing and Specifications
A recent listing by a Philippine retailer revealed the Gigabyte RX 9070 XT Gaming OC priced at approximately $529. The card is rumored to feature:
Navi 48 XT GPU die
16GB GDDR6 memory
256-bit memory bus
Boost clock close to 3 GHz
Frank Azor also hinted that AMD’s naming convention now reflects the target competition, reinforcing the RX 9070 XT’s position as a contender for NVIDIA's mid-tier GPUs.
AMD’s Strategy to Win the GPU War
While details remain sparse, AMD’s commitment to delivering strong raster performance will be critical. Though NVIDIA holds a lead in ray tracing technology, AMD’s pricing strategy and improved RDNA 4 architecture could provide a compelling alternative for gamers.
