A ‘Rocket League Minus the Cars’ 3v3 F2P Arcade Game Superball Shadow-Dropped on PC and Xbox Series X/S

Pathea Games, the studio best known for My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock, and the upcoming My Time at Evershine, has surprised fans with the sudden launch of Superball, a new free-to-play 3v3 arcade hero football game now available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.

The game was unexpectedly revealed and released during the ID@Xbox and IGN Showcase, instantly catching the attention of players and critics alike. Superball has been described as a mix between Rocket League and Overwatch, combining fast-paced, physics-driven arena football with hero-based character roles and unique abilities.

Players can choose from 17 distinct heroes, each falling into one of three roles: goalkeeper, midfielder, or forward. Goalkeepers are slower, tank-like defenders equipped with shields and powerful long-range shots. Midfielders are versatile two-way players capable of both supporting defense and initiating offense. Forwards are aggressive attackers focused entirely on scoring goals, offering explosive offensive capabilities.

In a press release, lead producer Guo Yuheng shared the studio’s excitement and gratitude toward fans who have followed the project’s evolution over the years:

“After years of iteration, sleepless nights, and many Chongqing hot summers, our team at Pathea is thrilled to finally bring Superball to players. We’re incredibly grateful to our community for their patience and for sticking with us on this journey. What started as a PvP mech combat game evolved into something much bigger and polished, when a football-inspired side mode captured the team’s imagination. We can’t wait to see everyone jump into the arenas, unleash their favorite heroes, and help shape the future of Superball together with us.”

Superball began its development journey as Super Buckyball Tournament back in 2019, before being officially renamed in July 2024. After multiple beta tests, alpha phases, and delays, Pathea has finally delivered a polished and energetic arcade experience that blends competitive sports and hero combat.

Besides the standard 3v3 gameplay, Superball also features four additional game modes: Slam Dunk, Dodgeball, Icebreaker, and Divine Path, each offering unique mechanics and challenges to keep matches fresh. As a free-to-play live service title, it launches with a Season 1 Battle Pass.

However, there’s a unique twist in the F2P structure: players will have 72 hours from registration to try all available heroes. After that trial period, they can use one voucher to permanently unlock their favorite hero, while the rest must be unlocked progressively through gameplay.

While Superball is also listed on Xbox Game Pass, its free-to-play nature makes that inclusion more symbolic than essential. For now, the game is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S, with potential releases for PlayStation and Nintendo consoles possibly coming later.

Will Superball become the next big competitive sports hit, or will it struggle to find footing in a crowded F2P market? Only time and teamwork will tell.
