Crystal Dynamics Reportedly Leading a New Lord of the Rings Game as Warhorse Rumours Continue
A new report suggests that Crystal Dynamics, not Warhorse Studios, is the team currently attached to the next major Lord of the Rings game, adding more clarity to one of the more closely watched fantasy rumours in gaming right now. According to Insider Gaming, the studio behind Tomb Raider is reportedly developing the Middle earth title that had previously been linked to Abu Dhabi Investment Office backing and described as a third person, open world action game designed to compete on a large scale. The same report says the project is still “a bit away,” which suggests players should not expect a reveal in the immediate term.
That matters because earlier speculation had pointed toward Warhorse Studios, the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, as the developer behind the rumored Tolkien project. At the same time, the report does not completely rule Warhorse out from working on its own Lord of the Rings related project, which leaves the door open for there to be more than one Middle earth game in development.
From a strategic perspective, Crystal Dynamics makes a lot of sense. The studio has long experience handling cinematic action adventure projects and major franchise work, and it remains under the Embracer umbrella, a company that has been very vocal about wanting to expand the Lord of the Rings business across games and other media. If Embracer is aiming for a premium, character driven, large scale Middle earth experience, Crystal Dynamics is a credible fit for that vision. The reported ADIO support is also substantial, with multiple outlets tying the project to roughly 100 million dollars in backing, which signals ambitions well beyond a smaller licensed spin off.
There is still plenty of uncertainty around the shape of the game itself. No official announcement has been made by Crystal Dynamics, Embracer, or Middle earth Enterprises, and no concrete gameplay direction beyond the broad open world action framing has been confirmed publicly. That means it is still too early to say whether this is a story driven single player title, a broader RPG, or something with more systemic world design. What is clear is that the current rumour aligns more naturally with Crystal Dynamics’ traditional strengths than with a live service push. If this project is real, fans will likely hope the studio is being allowed to focus on the kind of premium single player adventure experience it is best known for delivering.
Warhorse, meanwhile, remains an intriguing wildcard. The studio’s reputation for grounded world building and deep RPG systems makes it an appealing match for Middle earth in its own right, especially if the goal is a more immersive and systems heavy interpretation of Tolkien’s world. But at this point, that connection remains less certain than the Crystal Dynamics report. Right now, the strongest rumour points to Crystal Dynamics as the studio behind the ADIO backed Lord of the Rings project, while Warhorse remains a possibility rather than the clearest answer.
For Lord of the Rings fans, the bigger takeaway is that Embracer still appears committed to expanding the franchise’s presence in gaming in a serious way. Whether that leads to one large project or multiple titles across different studios, Middle earth is clearly still being treated as a major interactive property with long term growth potential. The only missing piece now is official confirmation.
What do you think, would you rather see Crystal Dynamics build a cinematic Lord of the Rings adventure, or would Warhorse be the more exciting studio for a deeper RPG set in Middle earth?
